ABOUT SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ

Sussex County is the northernmost county in New Jersey, known for its picturesque "Skylands Region" and abundant natural beauty. Its landscape is dominated by rolling hills, mountains, forests, and numerous lakes and rivers, largely shaped by ancient glaciers.

Geography and Landscape:

  • Appalachian Mountains: A significant portion of the county lies within the Ridge and Valley Appalachians, including Kittatinny Mountain, where New Jersey's highest point, High Point (1,803 feet), is located.
  • Highlands Region: The eastern part of the county features the older New York-New Jersey Highlands, crucial for providing fresh water to millions in New Jersey and New York City.
  • Waterways: Important rivers like the Paulinskill, Flatbrook, and Wallkill flow through the county. Many lakes are also present, including the largest in New Jersey, Lake Hopatcong, along with Culvers Lake and Lake Mohawk.
  • Glacial Influence: The county's soils and many of its natural features were formed by glaciers, contributing to its scenic environment.

History and Economy:

  • Early Settlements: Historically, Sussex County's economy revolved around farming and mining, particularly zinc and iron. Franklin was once known as the "Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World" due to its unique minerals.
  • Agricultural Roots: Dairy farming, along with fruit cultivation (apples, peaches), was historically significant due to the land's characteristics.
  • Modern Economy: Today, the main economic activities include services, retail trade, and to a lesser extent, mining, insurance, and agriculture. There's also a growing focus on industries like health care, social assistance, and educational services. Freight-intensive industries, such as construction, manufacturing, and wholesale trade, also play a role, with 98% of freight moving by truck.

Demographics (as of recent estimates):

  • Population: Around 144,000-146,000 people.
  • Median Age: Approximately 43-44 years old.
  • Race and Ethnicity: Primarily White (around 80-81% non-Hispanic White), with smaller percentages of Hispanic, Black, and Asian residents.
  • Income: Median household income is around $114,000.
  • Education: A high percentage of residents (over 95%) have a high school diploma or higher, and around 40% hold a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Homeownership: The homeownership rate is quite high, around 85%.

Tourism and Recreation: Sussex County is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and offers a variety of attractions:

  • State Parks and Forests: High Point State Park (home to the High Point Monument with panoramic views), Stokes State Forest, Allamuchy Mountain, Hopatcong, Swartswood, and Wawayanda State Parks offer extensive opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and winter sports like skiing and cross-country skiing.
  • Appalachian Trail: The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through the county, offering unique hiking experiences.
  • Water Activities: Lakes and rivers are popular for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. Mountain Creek Waterpark offers water-based thrills.
  • Agritourism: The county maintains its farming heritage with agritourism opportunities, including farm stands and farmers markets.
  • Historical Sites: Visitors can explore historical sites like the Franklin and Sterling Hill mines (now museums) and the Elias Van Bunschooten Museum.
  • Family-Friendly Attractions: Other attractions include TreEscape Aerial Adventure Park, Skylands Stadium (home to the Sussex County Miners baseball team), Wild West City (a western theme park), and Space Farms Zoo and Museum.
  • Performing Arts: The Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts and Tri-State Actors Theatre offer cultural experiences.

Sussex County's rural character, natural beauty, and array of recreational activities make it a significant part of New Jersey's "Skylands" and a desirable location for residents and tourists seeking an outdoors-focused lifestyle.

Our Process

The first step is to set up a consultation appointment. The easiest way is through our appointments page. In addition, you can call to schedule an appointment by phone. Studio visits and shop at home services are by appointment, Monday through Friday. We strongly recommend setting up an appointment to ensure Melanie’s availability.

Next, you will consult with Melanie herself. She will help you bring out your ideas, come up with new ones, or provide inspiration for future projects. View samples in your home from her “showroom on wheels” that Melanie brings everywhere with her.
